There is nothing quite like the excitement of buying a plant that you have been wanting for some time. Especially buying online, where there is the wait for it to arrive and then the thrill of when it does get delivered. It’s a lot like Xmas really, except you get a gift you actually want.
Recently I bought myself one of my first big leafed Philodendrons. A Philodendron Silver Cloud, a cultivar of the P. Mamei. The leaves can grow up to two foot wide. This one is just a baby so it will take a while to get leaves even half that size.
The plant arrived in awesome condition and lucky me, it had a second growth point. I considered having a “double header”, but, I am trying to grow my collection so splitting it made the most sense. Looking back though I should have held off cutting it until the second point grew into a leaf. There was though, enough roots to supply both sides and keep them both healthy. Once the smaller one is bigger I will decide which one to keep.
The main plant has sadly been damaged by a recent heatwave. 40 – 44deg over 4 days was just a bit too much for it’s young leaves and the last day fried the leaves almost entirely. I learnt a lot through this and I know I was not the only one who had burnt leaves that day. Lucky the new on coming leaf was not burnt and although it’s small, it will set the plant up with the goods to produce a better leaf next time. This is the plant now.
So there it is. My Philodendron Silver Cloud. It’s had a rough start but in no time, will look fabulous again… both of them.
Thanks for reading and happy growing. Xx
